What is Singles Day? 11 Nov 2021

Singles Day (11/11) is a massive shopping day in Asia, that is starting to make its way around the world. It is like Asia's version of Black Friday. The day is also kind of like a Valentines Day but for Single People. You might buy a gift for yourself, or for a friend. But mainly you just treat yourself by going crazy with all the amazing deals on offer.

Singles Day was created in 2011, and again, there are many other interpretations, but essentially you can make of the day what you want. It was originally started by the mega Chinese website Alibaba.com. It is really just another excuse for a sale, and they go hard over there. The Alibaba website itself last year sold $40 billion dollars of goods in a single day. Yes, I said Billion with a B.

This one massive website will sell that many billions of dollars of goods in one day. They even have a Live TV Show on the day which has famous Asian celebrities performing, and has a tally of how much has been sold on the website throughout the day.

Singles Day is also known as Double 11, or 11/11 due it it being on the 11th Day of the 11th Month each year. The characters 11/11 look like people standing together. Again, its like Single People uniting together, like Couples unite together on Valetines Day.

Remember 5 years ago when nobody even gave a thought to Black Friday? Singles Day is like that and will start to become more and more common as NZ companies run promotions on this day. This year the Warehouse group has jumped on board so it is starting to enter the mainstream. They are running deals at all the stores they own (the Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery, Noel Leeming etc.)
